Top 10 Character Challenge

kickbuttkidlit:

Just in time for my summer reading post, I was tagged in a challenge by hnstoneauthor and eachstaraworld to list my top ten favorite characters from 10 different fandoms/series, so why not do a book edition, (no matter how painful to overlook video games and anime)?

In no order whatsoever:

  • Sophie Hatter, from Howl’s Moving Castle by Diana Wynne Jones
  • Karou, from Daughter of Smoke and Bone by Laini Taylor
  • Kazul, from The Enchanted Forest Chronicles by Patricia C. Wrede
  • Richard Campbell Gansey III, from The Raven Cycle by Maggie Stiefvater
  • Nikolai Karimov, from upcoming The Crown’s Game by Evelyn Skye
  • Elizabeth Bennet, from Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austin
  • Kelsior, from Mistborn by Brandon Sanderson
  • Silas, from The Graveyard Book by Neil Gaiman
  • Pi Patel, from The Life of Pi by Yann Martel
  • The unicorn (Lady Amalthea), from The Last Unicorn by Peter S. Beagle

And I tag… all of you! Every single person who reads it. Feel free to blame me ( kkazulwolf or kazul9) or the KBKL blog for the challenge. ;) And be sure to check out everyone’s summer reading-themed posts, including Kendra’s coming on the 28th!

Bacon, out.

Forgot to reblog this one to my main blog! So, two posts, one day. :)

Meet the Authors: 10 Q&A with Kazul (aka Bacon)

kickbuttkidlit:

This month Kick-Butt Kid Lit is introducing its contributors. Here is a Q&A with author K. Kazul Wolf.

Favourite Authors/Genres/Characters?

I adore fantasy most of all the genres. And any age category, though I lean towards kidlit, naturally. I love Diana Wynne Jones because you’ll never find an author with more insane, complicated and brilliant plots, and Laini Taylor because dat prose! My favorite sort of characters are the kind with huge arcs, the ones that end up flipped on their head and totally different than they were in the beginning. Someday I’ll manage to write one, someday…

Which book world would you like to live in?

Oooh, man. I think early Narnia. Imagine watching a world grow, and being a part of shaping it.

What’s in your writing cave?

That’s hard to say, since I weirdly like to move around when I write — my bedroom, to the family room, to the kitchen, to lounged on the floor. My most productive place to write is out in public, at a cafe or a library or the like. Always food, though. My stomach is a black hole.

If you could magic wand a character into real life, who would you choose?

Can I bring my namesake, Kazul the king of dragons? Because she’s awesomely sassy and hilarious, and who couldn’t use a dragon in their life?

What’s your secret identity (day job)?

I’m a chef! Well, currently a chef, who works as a baker, who’s disguised as a barista. Fine dining is my specialty — I’ve studied at the CIA (not THAT CIA, The Culinary Institute of America) and the restaurant I current work at is a four-diamond establishment. Though if I actually go out to eat, I’m totally the sort to go for a juicy burger and fries.

What resource did you wish you’d known about when you first started out writing/querying?

I wish I knew how amazing the writing community across the internet was. I thought I had to go it alone, I had to perfect it on my own, and I had to survive it all without a hand to hold. No, a book is about community.

Pen and paper or keyboard?

Both! I write and edit by keyboard, and “outline” during the day at work in a notebook. For some reason, that’s the only way I can get away with outlining — only plan a chapter or two ahead with pen and paper. I actually got so bored playing barista in the past week I ended up accidentally plotting a whole novel. We’ll see how that goes after I’m done with my current WIP!

Three books you love?

  • Howl’s Moving Castle by Diana Wynne Jones
  • Daughter of Smoke and Bone by Laini Taylor
  • Dealing with Dragons by Patricia C. Wrede

Guilty pleasure?

I am the biggest freaking anime dork. I’m so psyched about the new Digimon series this coming April. There’s no saving me.

What is your current work in progress about?

Luckily I spent time procrastinating trying to write up a rough query of my current novel, ESSENCE:

Emma wakes up to a man with black eyes and razor-pointed teeth hovering over her, in a strange house, an even stranger land. She can’t even try to run; the town she’s in is surrounded by a ward that keeps out a seething darkness of eaters — formless remains of people who have lost their souls, and will do anything to get another. But even that doesn’t compare to the fact that she can’t even remember who she was before she woke up.

The monster-man, Bob, and the owner of the house, a Magician named Morgan, seem nice enough, though the sink like a bottomless pit, an oven that likes to shoot its racks at unsuspecting victims are a little hard to swallow. There’s no solace outside — the townsfolk blame her for the infestation of monsters, and it’s only Morgan and Bob keeping her safe. Emma can’t understand what motivates them to help her, what’s in it for them and what they want from her. The truth is a tricky thing when you can barely remember your own name.

Hey guys! :D I’m a contributor over at this new, awesome blog where we’ll choose one topic every month for us to explore, so you can see it from the perspective of nine different authors. It’s new, so there’s only our interviews there now, BUT IT’S GOING TO BE AMAZING.

A Very Inspiring Blogger Award?!

blogger award

I’ve been nominated by Tara Sim to do a Very Inspiring Blogger Award post! Tara was someone who I was in Pitch Wars with, and is an amazing person and writer. You should totally go stalk her. Now. I’ll wait.

So, for this award post I have to post seven things about myself, then nominate others to take part. Welp, here goes:

  1. I can’t drink coffee. I learned this when I was volunteering at my zoo’s Halloween event, where they passed around coffee to us because it was absolutely freezing. I was working at the balloon houses. I literally bounced off walls.
  2. Dubstep is what I listen to while writing and relaxing. To each their own?
  3. Even though I’m a writer, I didn’t like reading at all until I was about ten or eleven, then discovered Narnia and Harry Potter (can’t remember which came first; the witch or the wizard).
  4. I have eaten cat food before because I was curious. That curiosity gets me in a lot of trouble.
  5. Despite my angry eyes, my favorite color is actually blue. Haha, no, I’m not running out of things to say, I swear. Ehem.
  6. I studied at the CIA. Okay, The Culinary Institute of America. And I don’t have a full degree from there, but it’s still fun to freak people out with that.
  7. I made it! Uh, I mean… I have a huge soft spot for all animals. My most recent cat was abandoned at my mom’s job, and I never so much as questioned driving over and getting the poor, scrawny thing. (His name is Cindy, by the by. You might have heard me complain about the bugger. A lot.)

Now to nominate! Hmmm, I choose:

  • alaskapenn – She writes amazing books about anime-centaurs and other fantastical things.
  • Molly Louise – A writer friend who I’ve beta’d with, and is definitely going places.
  • Joy Smith – Because you said you needed things to blog about (and taught me more about writing than anyone else ever has).
  • altairattorney – For writing the most amazing fanfiction.
  • Hannah Smith – Just because you’re so cool. And I dare my fabulous Boyfriend to vlog this, since I’m pretty sure you don’t have a blog.
  • everqueen12 – Since you’re such a super-awesome amazing writer and friend.

Filler Episode! (Alternatively, I’ve been tagged.)

Since the prompt challenge seems to be on a permanent delay lately, enjoy some filler!

Once you’ve been tagged, you are supposed to write a note with 92 truths about you. At the end, choose 25 people to be tagged. You have to tag the person who tagged you

alaskapenn, leylineboys, eveningrelics, ranetree, mjutini, wimble-wambleomg-rainbow-fenrir, seastarved, and EVERYONE WHO READS THIS (if they are willing).

That’s over 25 people, right?

Right.

Merry Christmas!

I hope all of you are having amazing holidays, no matter what you do or don’t celebrate! My day is going to be spent with my insane family, so I’ll catch you all on the flip side.

And, because I didn’t think it through, I’m 90% sure there will be no prompt story tomorrow as I totally forgot it was Christmas this week. Yup, my brain’s smurt.

Anyhow, again, I hope you guys have a fantastic day! What are your plans?

PitchWars Blog Hop: The Story Behind the Storm

Alright, so I’m here to talk about why I wrote the novel I got into PitchWars with: Summer Thunder. But the story is a little bit more of a how than a why.

I got the inspiration from the story from a few direct sources (Thunder Clatter by Wild Cub, my weird love of thunder storms in the heat of summer, the idea of someone being persecuted for killing a dragon — which I wrote a very depressing short story about, too — and this prompt from a friend: “What if he has no voice, he’s a social outcast, he doesn’t look that good and he’s not that funny?”), but I need a big kick in the butt to start a novel. The only thing I really had to start plotting this story was that tagline you’ve probably seen around if you were following me this time this last year:

She’s on the run for a crime punishable by death: killing a dragon.

So what did I do with that? The most sane thing possible: I wrote a chapter every day for NaNo, and put the entire story in my reader’s hands. I didn’t expect anything legible to come out of it, but thought it would be a challenge to have people give me prompts every day to direct where the story would go, or throw challenges in my way. And boy did people take advantage of that. I’m still scarred from the chapter that I had to work in an ’80’s baby blue tuxedo, duck and pudding, and an allergy to sand. Did I mention that it’s a high fantasy, set in a desert? Yeah.

The site I wrote it on still exists, if you want to check out the fan art — and see proof that I’m totally insane. It was a ton of fun, and stress, and I learned so much. But I was completely prepared to scrap the story at the end.

If it weren’t for a few particularly persistent friends, it’d still be buried in a corner of the internet, a rotting file on my computer. But everyone kept pushing, so I did an insane, month-long revision to enter it in PitchWars, and, well, here I am. Ready to see what comes from the alternate round and have a list of agents to query after that.

I’m forever thankful to Evelyn Skye for being my brilliant mentor, Brenda Drake for being so generous to run this contest, iwriteforapples.com for hosting the alternate round, and everyone else who’s pulling the strings behind this extraordinary contest that’s taught me so much, and brought me to know some absolutely amazing people. (One of those amazing people being Carleen Karanovic, who’s organizing this blog hop!)

Okay, okay, I’m done gushing. Now time to write two Novels for NaNo. (Yay?) Anyone else joining the insanity? Hoping to write your own PitchWars novel?

A wild Bacon appears… My face! As teased a few weeks back. And I have an important question for the internet at large: which one should I use as my author pic? (Also, sorry for completely forgetting about the prompt challenge this week! A few things exploded, so I swear I’ll at least get the […]

Tagged x5

I’ve been tagged in a few sorts of posts in the past few months so BAM. One huge masterpost of probably ridiculous answers for simple questions.

image

Okay, in no particular order:

~

First up, twerkingtargaryens.

~

1) If you could put anything in your house right now (like rooms or waterslides or something) what would it be?

A room of pillows and couches and comfy-ness. That is literally my goal in life – to have a house with a room like that.

2) What is the worst thing your significant other could do to you?

Whoa, that was a jump to super-deep. XD Lying about or hiding something important.

3) What song do you listen to when you’re sad?

It depends! But generally, “Hello My Old Heart” by The Of Hellos.

4) What was the last picture you took?

image

5) What’s the one thing you like most about yourself?

Um… God. My ability to get up again, I guess.

Name: Kazul

Nicknames: Bacon, Sophie, Goldfish, Senpai

Birthday: April, a long time ago.

Gender: Female

Sexuality: Ace

Height: 6’

Timezone: Eastern? Can’t remember the fancy GMT time.

What time and date is it there: 10:32 am September 1st

Average hours of sleep I get each night: 6, or 12. Yeah.

The last thing I googled was: *cough*Thegifforthebeginningofthispost*cough*

My most used phrase(s): Hmm. I know I have a crapton, but I can’t think of any. Anyone want to make fun of me for them? :’D

First word that comes to mind: Doritos.

What I last said to a family member: “Can you throw me that box of Cheerios?”

One place that makes me happy and why: The bluffs of Lake Ontario. I started writing there, it’s my place to be lost for just a little bit.

OTPs: Uh. Uhhhh. Kirito and Asuna from SAO, Karou and Akiva from DoSaB, Syaoran and Sakura from Tsubasa and… Man, I’m just a general canon shipper who watches shows mostly for plot DON’T HURT ME.

How many blankets I sleep under: In the summer, none, in the winter, as many as I can get. I joke that I’m cold-blooded.

Favorite beverage(s): HOT CHOCOLATE. But the good stuff, not that packet junk.

The last movie I watched in the cinema: How to Train your Dragon 2 (WHICH WAS AMAZING)

Three things I can’t live without: Okay, nixing sleep/food/water because those are amazing and we’d die without them: kitties, books and video games and story-based media in general, and music.

Something I plan to learn: Everything that I can.

A piece of advice for all my followers: You’re all absolutely amazing. No, seriously. You exist in a universe so impossibly big, and the chance of life actually existing is so small, and so impossible, that the fact that you’re alive, reading this, makes you amazing beyond belief. (Though I’ve no idea why anyone would actually take the time to read this far in.)

You all have to listen to this song: “Opus 28” by Dustin O’Halloran

Rule one: Always post the rules.
Rule two: Answer the questions the person who tagged you asked and write 11 new ones.
Rule three: Tag 11 people and link them to the post

1. What’s your favorite hairstyle, on yourself or other people?

I… honestly don’t care at all whatsoever about hair. X’D Personally, I like my hair long because I mess with it when I get anxious.

2. Favorite dessert?

YOU CRUEL, CRUEL PERSON. YOU DO KNOW THAT I’M A BAKER, RIGHT? Okay. My favorite thing to eat at my bakery is out cannoli filling. You haven’t eaten until you’ve had out cannoli filling. (I hate shells, though. But I don’t like crusts on pies either, so *ducks for cover*)

3. Place(s) you want to visit the most and why?

Hmmm. I want to go visit my best friends again, for rather obvious reasons. Only having one friend in your own giant state gets a little lonely. Otherwise? I want to travel the world. I was t see and feel and smell and taste cultures that I can only read about from here.

4. Video game you hate and why?

I don’t think I’ve ever HATED a video game? I’m generally fairly passive on longer forms of art; I just drop them when they don’t click. :’D

5. Opinion on plastic sugary?

I… that’s a typo, right? Because that is a BEAUTIFUL typo. I guess I’m not in a place where I want/need plastic surgery, so I really don’t know. I do think some people have a problem with it, and I think sometimes it would be amazing to address underlying issues first, but, I’m not in their shoes. Those are just thoughts.

6. What’s your dream house?

COUCHES AND PILLOWS AND CUSHIONS EVERYWHERE. <3 I am a lounge lizard, so the more comfortable, the better. And, if life continues in the direction it’s going in, I’d really like somewhere small, just enough room for a nice kitchen and a place to keep my books.

7. Strangest thing you did as a child?

Oh God. I don’t know if there’s a way to honestly answer this. I was a strange, strange, strange child. I was the sort that went outside all day long and hunted down bugs and snakes and salamanders and frogs, and then kept them and studied them and researched them. I was also a kid with “management skills,” who spent a vast majority of her time in her head.
I’m just going to have to think on this one.

8. Favorite flower and why?

Iris. They were my favorite in my garden while growing up, and they just look so different. Just a soft spot, I guess. :)

9. Make a playlist for someone hearing sound for the first time (at least 3-5 songs).

WHY DO YOU DO THIS TO ME. This question is nearly impossible, especially since I listen to music with strong emotional/memory ties, so here’s what I have from some very panicked browsing of my iTunes.

  1. Hello my Old Heart – The Oh Hellos
  2. To Build a Home – The Cinematic Orchestra
  3. Opus 28 – Dustin O’ Halloran
  4. Someone Out of Town – Yuna
  5. Come Back When You Can – Barcelona
  6. The Lightning Strike (What If This Storm Ends?) – Snow Patrol
  7. Chained – The XX
  8. Pumpin’ Blood – NONONO
  9. Home – Foxes
  10. A Year Ago Today – Bear’s Den

10. Your OTP of OTPs?

I DON’T HAVE ONE. DX Maybe… River and Johnny from To the Moon? Just because, man. That journey

11. Is there a story behind your name? Username or real name, and if so, what is it?

No no, I won’t tell you. Go read Dealing with Dragons by Patricia C. Wrede.

  • Rule 1: Always post the rules
  • Rule 2: Answer the 11 questions that the person tagged you asked and write 11 new ones
  • Rule 3: Tag 11 people
  • Rule 4: Tell them you tagged them

1. What is your favorite holiday?

Halloween, methinks. Though the build-up to it is sometimes more exciting than the holiday itself.

2. If you could travel back to any point in your past would you?

No.

3. What is the airspeed velocity of a swallow?

I feel like I should make a bad joke here, but instead I went to Google. YES IT’S ALREADY A JOKE, and here, science.

4. Funniest injury you ever got?

I popped by elbow out of its socket while swimming. That’s right folks. A near-zero impact sport.

5. Best city and/or country you ever visited?

HMMM. Washington DC was pretty freaking amazing.

6. One of the first movies you remember enjoying as a kid?

I remember many Disney movies blurred together, but the first disctinct one would either have to be Dragonheart, or The Princess Bride. I believe that explains a lot.

7. Favorite dessert?

ALREADY ANSWERED ABOVE, BOOM.

8. A TV show you didn’t think you’d like but ended up loving?

SWORD ART ONLINE (the first half of the first season). LET’S WATCH SOMETHING STUPID AND CLICHE, I SAID. SOMETHING THAT’S PROBABLY BORING, I SAID.

9. The coolest person you unexpectedly met? (This could a friend or whatever, or a famous person of some kind)

primaryfeather. I randomly started talking to her about the fact that we were both homeschooled, many, many years ago back on Inkpop. And now she’s the only friend I’ve ever had for this long.

10. Your Hogwarts house (if you are in fact a fan of Harry Potter).

Ravenclaw, hell yeah.

11. If you found yourself thrust into an rpg-like world, what class/job would you have or what would be your weapon of choice?

ROGUE. I’m a fan of fast and effective, so small razor-sharp assassin blades, please.

Last, but certainly not least, femmebotnoir

~

1. If you could rename yourself (no matter how much you love your name), what would it be?

Dude, I love my real name way too much, but I suppose I’d re-name myself as my penname otherwise?

2. If you could live in any television universe, what would it be?

It’s times like this I wish I actually watched TV, then remember five minutes later that anime counts as TV. Ummmmmmm… I think Noein is pretty freaking amazing and quANTIM PHYSICS HELL YEAH *cough*

3. What novel(s) had a huge impact on your life?  Not as in just what you like but what really changed the way you used to think.

Hmm. It’s been awhile since I’ve read a book like that. I thing the last one would be Daughter of Smoke and Bone, not because it changed my world view or anything spectacular like that, but because it made writing okay. I found that book in one of my lowest of low writing slumps, I was sincerely going to stop writing. And it was so beautiful that instead of wanting to throw everything I’ve ever written out the window (for once), it made me want to live up to it. Not to mention, after that it led me to a group of friends and fellow fans who are AMAZING and so much fun, and I’m very close to a few of them. :)

4. If you could have any animal as a pet, what would it be?

dRAGON.

5. What one historical event would you prevent after 1945?

Wow. That is a hell of a question, and I don’t think I have enough historical knowledge to answer that. So, so much crap has happened since then, even with my little frame of reference.

6. If you could have any one superpower, what would it be and why?

The ability to manipulate matter. Or physics. Because that would essentially make me a god.

7. If you could be any superhero/supervillain for a day or two, who would you be and why?

THESE QUESTIONS I SWEAR. I don’t really follow many superhero universes right now, but in a world without kryponite growing out of every crack, being Superman would be cool

8. What’s your favorite comedy?

Comedy isn’t my favorite, hmm… *goes to look at movie shelf* The Emperor’s New Groove,

9. If you could write any television, movie or comic series then what would it be?

As in a a re-making of something else? Or my own thing? If someone else’s, I would be all over doing a version of Howl’s Moving Castle that actually resembles the book (not dissing the movie, I like it, it’s just honestly NOTHING LIKE the book and the book is bloody brilliant). My own? I have this story called Hollow Beast that takes place in a castle, where each season is a day, and I don’t think I could ever do justice to with words alone. I’d need to team up with an artist/director to bring that one about.

10. Would you work for Disney, Dreamwork or another animation company?

YES. Never, ever Disney, but I’d totally go for Dreamworks. Actually, Ghibli would be my ideal.

11. You and me are gonna go on holiday.  Where would we go and why? (Feel free to bring other Tumbr people or not me!  But I like holidays.)

Oh God, I don’t know! I guess I’d find the cheapest tickets and most affordable ways to stay at the place and we’d just go exploring? I travel how I write; very little planning done before I get there.

~

OKAY.

DONE.

ALL OF THEM.

And now since I’m supposed to be tagging many people, I tag ALL OF YOU WHO READ THIS FAR. You get to pick one of the sets of questions I answered above, and have at it.

Why, Hello, #PitchWars and #PimpMyBio

So as a a few of you (and anyone who follows me on Twitter), know, I’ve entered PitchWars! And so to help the mentors get to know us possible-mentees while they stalk applicants, there’ve been bios written by the mentees popping up, now gathered over here. And, well, why not join in other than being horrible socially awkward?

I live in the absolute middle of nowhere in upstate/not-quite-western New York. Proof? I have chickens, sheep, three dogs, many cats (one of which is mine and lovingly known as Perv cat), and an evil bunny, with not a soul complaining about all the noise.

While I’m not hanging out in that insane asylum, I work as a baker at a four-diamond restaurant. I started off as a chef, having worked at a diner, another fine dining place, had a stint at the CIA – the other CIA – and finally settled at this place. I have to get up at 2am to go to work, so I tend to be pretty insane.

Not that I wasn’t insane to begin with.

http://media.tumblr.com/tumblr_lrfnnci0aA1qffyvl.gif

Despite being a book, video game, and kinda-comic addict my whole life, I actually didn’t start writing as a serious hobby until I was eighteen. Before that I was a swimming jock. Then I had the swine flu for a ridiculously intense six months that left me with asthma for a year, and constant sinus pain and infections that I still have. I pretty much lost all that I’d worked for. So while I was stuck in bed watching too much anime, I wrote my first novel.

I’m a totally fantasy addict, writing all across the board of YA/occasionally NA fantasy, and sometimes sticking my nose into other spec genres. I have a project in the works with Villipede Press, but not too much else to brag about (maybe other than the silly prompt challenge… which I should be writing right now).

That’s it! All I have to share about boring old me.

Bacon, out.
